How Many Photos Do You Need for a Memorial Slideshow?

For a typical 5-minute memorial slideshow at 5 seconds per photo, plan for about 58 photos; at a faster 4 seconds per photo, plan for about 73. Use the calculator below to get an exact count for your own target length, or enter how many photos you already have to see how long your slideshow will run.

For example, 5 for a 5-minute slideshow.
4-5 seconds is typical. Use 3-4 for a faster pace with more photos, or 6-7 for a slower pace.
Advanced: title/end slides and music
Default is 10 seconds total. Set to 0 if you are skipping both.
Used only to estimate how many songs you’ll need. 3.5 minutes is a reasonable average.

Formula: photos = (minutes × 60 − buffer seconds) ÷ seconds per photo. minutes = (photos × seconds per photo + buffer seconds) ÷ 60. Songs needed ≈ total minutes ÷ average song length.

The formula and a quick table

Photos needed = (minutes × 60 − 10 seconds for a title and end slide) ÷ seconds per photo. The 10-second buffer is Candlefold’s own default; use 0 if you skip both slides.

The formula, in plain words

Photos needed = (minutes × 60 − 10 seconds for a title and end slide) ÷ seconds per photo.

The 10-second buffer is Candlefold’s own default for a short title card at the start and a closing card at the end; if you skip both, use 0. Seconds per photo is a pacing choice: faster pacing shows more photos in the same time, slower pacing shows fewer but gives each one more room to be seen.

Total length (working the other direction) = (number of photos × seconds per photo + buffer seconds) ÷ 60.

Songs needed ≈ total minutes ÷ average song length. Using a typical song length of about 3.5 minutes, a 10-minute slideshow needs about 3 songs; a 5-minute slideshow needs about 2.

How many photos for a 5-minute slideshow?

It depends on your pace. Here is the exact count Candlefold’s formula gives for a 5-minute (300-second) slideshow at each common pace, after the 10-second title/end buffer:

4 secFast — more photos, quicker pace73

6 secSlower — easier to take in each photo48
7 secSlow — best for a smaller, meaningful set41

How long should a memorial slideshow actually be?

Honestly, there’s no single agreed-upon “right” length — the guides we checked don’t agree with each other. TributeMontage suggests a brisk 3-4 seconds per photo and pairs length to song count (one song ≈ 3-4 minutes ≈ 50-60 photos; three songs ≈ 10 minutes ≈ 160-180 photos). QuickFuneral instead recommends an overall 6-10 minute slideshow at a slower 5-7 seconds per photo. Rather than pick a winner, we built the calculator so you can set your own pace and see the real number for your own situation.

A pattern that comes up across sources and that families we’ve talked with recognize: a shorter, focused version (roughly 4-8 minutes) for the service itself, when everyone is seated and watching, and a longer, looping version (10 minutes or more) for a visitation or reception, where people come and go and don’t need to see the whole thing start to finish.

What if I only have a handful of photos?

Slow the pace down. Twenty photos at 7 seconds each (plus the 10-second buffer) runs about 2 minutes and 30 seconds — a complete, respectful tribute rather than something that feels thin. There’s no minimum photo count that makes a slideshow “valid.”

What if I have hundreds of photos?

Either speed up the pace (3-4 seconds per photo) or be selective and choose the photos that tell the story best. A slideshow much longer than about 12-15 minutes tends to work better as a looping background at a reception than as the centerpiece of the service, where attention is limited.

Does the music length matter?

Yes, if you’d like the slideshow to line up with your music rather than end mid-song or fade out early. Enter your song’s actual length in the calculator, or use the songs-needed field below to see how many songs of a given length you’ll need to fill your target time.

How many songs will I need?

Divide your total slideshow length by your average song length. Using roughly 3.5 minutes per song as an average:

5 minutes2
8 minutes3

Questions families ask

How many photos for a 5-minute slideshow?

At 5 seconds per photo, about 58 photos. At a faster 4 seconds per photo, about 73. At a slower 6-7 seconds per photo (good for older or fewer photos), about 41-48.

How many for a 10-minute slideshow?

About 118 photos at 5 seconds each, or about 148 at a faster 4 seconds each. See the full table below for other lengths and paces.

How long should a memorial slideshow actually be?

Sources disagree on an exact 'ideal' number, so treat any single figure as a starting point, not a rule. Guides we checked range from about 4 minutes (one song) to 10 minutes; a common pattern is a shorter, tighter video (4-8 minutes) for the service itself, and a longer, looping version (10+ minutes) for visitation or the reception, since guests there drift in and out rather than watching straight through.

What if I only have a handful of photos?

Slow the pace down (6-7 seconds per photo, or longer) so a smaller set still fills a respectful length, or accept a shorter slideshow — a 2-3 minute tribute with 20-25 photos is a completely reasonable choice.

What if I have hundreds of photos?

Speed the pace up (3-4 seconds per photo) or be selective. Very long slideshows (over about 12-15 minutes) work better as a background loop at a reception than as the focus of the service itself.

Does the music length matter?

Yes, if you want the video to end when the song ends. Enter your song's length (or how many songs you're using) in the calculator to see how many songs a given slideshow length needs.

How many songs will I need?

Divide your total slideshow length by your average song length. At an average song length of about 3.5 minutes, a 10-minute slideshow needs about 3 songs.
